AGE SPOTS & KERATOSES

Age spots (seborrheic keratoses) are waxy thickening in the outer surface of the skin that are hereditary in nature. They generally tend to manifest themselves after about 35 or 40 years of age.

Initially there may be just one or a few lesions, but with time many age spots may form covering predisposed areas on the skin.

Seborrheic keratoses are not related to moles and thus do not share the same risk of developing mole-related cancers (melanomas). That being said, many people find it hard to discriminate between moles and age spots.

For this reason, it may still be wise to have a skin specialist examine any pigmented lesion that is new or changing to be sure.

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra is a description applied to an inherited tendency to develop multiple, small, often uniform appearing seborrheic keratoses on the mid-face. It is most common in patients with skin of colour.

Though age spots are benign, some patients find their appearance displeasing.  Fortunately, seborrheic keratoses can be removed safely and comfortably when specialized technology is properly applied to the affected skin.
